Rash of suspicious fires in County of Vermilion River

Published On: October 13, 2021By

Over the last couple of days, there has been a rash of suspicious fires in the County of Vermilion River.

Last night, just after 9:00 p.m., a caller reported observing a pick-up truck on fire near Range Road 20 and Township Road 532.

“Tones dropped for both Blackfoot Fire and Marwayne Fire and Rescue,” County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes told Lakeland Connect. “The first arriving Engine/Pumper found a fully involved vehicle fire.”

Chief Hughes says crews used the front-mounted torrent nozzle to fight and extinguish the blaze.

According to the Fire Chief, the surrounding area was checked for exposure, and the scene was handed over to the RCMP, who identified the vehicle as stolen out of the Blackfoot area.

“We’ve seen a rash of suspicious fires in our northern districts over the last few days,” County Fire Chief Hughes said. “County Peace Officers and the RCMP, no doubt, are increasing patrols, however, we ask residents to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to their local RCMP.”
