Skate park expansion underway at Imperial Park

Construction has begun on a significant expansion to the Cold Lake Skate Park at Imperial Park.

More than 3,000 square feet of new, rideable terrain will be added to the park after City Council committed $300,000 to the expansion in the 2021 capital budget. The addition will be constructed in a “flowing, street-style” design, utilizing ledges, mini ramps, A-frames and protected, enclosed areas for younger children and those just learning to ride.

“We really relied on the riders and the kids who use the park all the time to let us know what features they wanted to see in this expansion,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “They are the ones out there using the facility every day and they know what elements are needed most. Our design firm set up an online survey asking users what features and design elements they would most like to see added, and they received over 170 submissions. It’s clear the skate park is a very popular and well-used amenity for the community, and this expansion will bring it to the next level.”

The addition is being built east of the current skate park, and aside from a small section of concrete where the two will be joined, the current skate park will remain fully open and available to users during construction. Site preparation began in late June and construction is expected to last approximately 8 weeks. The addition is expected to be open to riders in mid-September.
