It’s the 70th anniversary of Mental Health Week
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Mental Health Week in Canada. Mental Health Week plays a major role in raising awareness of the importance of mental well-being and showing us how we can all take steps to improve our own mental health.
Spearheaded by the Canadian Mental Health Association, this week is an opportunity to promote mental health wellness, understanding and acceptance. You are never truly alone.
“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact people in different ways. For many – about 40 per cent of us – this includes a deterioration in mental health,” Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jason Luan said. “This Mental Health Week, everyone is encouraged to #GetReal about how you feel. It’s normal and healthy to feel a range of emotions. Being able to identify what you’re feeling, why you’re feeling the way you are and how to deal with your feelings is a positive step towards mental wellness. Remember: Name it, don’t numb it.”
Luan says if you are experiencing mental health challenges or want to take steps to maintain your health, please reach out to a friend, family member or professional for help or visit alberta.ca/mentalhealth for information on available resources, such as the Mental Health Helpline.
Alberta’s government has provided more than $53 million to enhance phone, online and in-person services as well as to support hundreds of community initiatives.
“This #MentalHealthWeek, let’s make a commitment to work together to protect and promote good mental health for everyone. Visit mentalhealthweek.ca for more information about how you can show your support,” Luan said.
The Mental Help Line in Alberta is a 24 hour, seven day a week confidential service that provides support, information and referrals to Albertans experiencing mental health concerns. The line is staffed by a multidisciplinary team comprised of nurses, psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychologists.
If you need someone to talk to your are never alone.
