Holiday Cards For Seniors project nearing a close

Local author and speaker, Billi J. Miller, has kick-started a Holiday Cards For Seniors program that will be coming to a close at noon on Thursday.

She heard about the project going on in other areas and wanted to start something locally in the Vermilion and Lloydminster area where residents would write Christmas cards for the elderly.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for seniors and more-so, after writing my first Farmwives book and becoming good friends with so many,” said Miller.

“The thought of so many seniors being isolated and unable to see their families during COVID has really bothered me.”

Through this project, she was able to create ways for people to help give a little extra cheer this season. The holiday card project works to get the community involved, and she also thought it would be a great opportunity to engage children.

“The great thing about this is that anyone can participate in sending a positive message – children can even add a drawing if they like,” said Miller.

She and her daughters will be delivering them to a variety of local senior’s homes prior to Christmas.

“I want my daughters to learn how important it is to value and respect the seniors around them and in our community.

She said that seniors contributions need to be recognized. Not all have families near them and even if they do, many are isolated and have been unable to visit during COVID. She encourages everyone to do what they can to support them and help them through this trying time.

“I think if we focus on others, it can help if we are feeling anxious about our own lives. It always, always fills us up when we try to make the day of another person better,” said Miller.

Cards should be left unsealed and not addressed to any person in particular.

They can be dropped off at Northern Lights Realty in Vermilion; E.H. Walter School in Paradise Valley; The Blonde Door in Kitscoty; as well as in Lloydminster to Musgrave Agencies, Addilynn Apparel, or the Lloydminster Exhibition.

A reminder to have them in by noon on Thursday as they will be picked up later the same day.
