Myrnam residents submit nominations for new Mayor

The Village of Myrnam is seeking a new Mayor.

After serving the community for approximately 20 years, past Mayor Ed Sosnowski, moved to St. Paul last month leaving a vacancy for the position.

Nomination day will be this Wednesday, October 14.

Myrnam typically has a three person council and although they were sad to say goodbye to a long time member, they are looking forward to future possibilities.

“When Sosnowski was on council we always worked as a team – no one ever made decisions on their own,” said Deputy Mayor, Raymond Yaremchuk.

“We would like to thank Ed for his many years of service and wish him all the best in the future. He was always very dedicated to the community and worked very hard to make improvements.”

Born and raised in Myrnam, Yaremchuk used to work for village as a maintenance man and said he tried living in the city but returned home where it was more comfort for him.

As councillor for the past 19 years, he has always looked after the water and sewer, streets and sidewalk, and waste management.

He figures it will work out with a new person on council because in all the years he’s been there, they’ve never really had an argument or disagreement in the council – there’s always been a focus on getting the work done.

“We’re always trying to build a better community, but nowadays it’s not very easy with the government cutbacks,” said Yaremchuk.

He said it will be tough to survive with less funds coming in. The County of Two Hills is facing a two million dollar cut in linear taxes.

“We are looking forward to a new council member coming to join us at the Village of Myrnam and working with us as a team,” said Yaremchuk.

Myrnam residents can find nomination forms online. Complete forms must be submitted between 10am and 12pm at the Village Office on October 14, to be eligible.

Myrnam means ‘peace for us’ in Ukrainian, and Yaremchuk said it’s a special place to live because it is a very quiet community.
