Lighten up and make your own drum

Last Updated: September 10, 2020By

Lighten Up Therapy will be hosting their first ever drum making class on September 27.

Elders from Tri-Spirit Creations in Joussard, Alberta will lead the class using natural hides.

“This was something we wanted to do in the spring but postponed it until a safe time,” said owner Amber Howard.

“We’re really happy to have this class going forward, and are beginning to plan for fall. We also want to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable.”

Masks will be provided or participants can bring their own, and hand sanitizer will be provided. Leaders will spend time preparing the right sizes of hides and rings, and participants will be working in partners of two.

The session will start and end with prayer circle.

Indigenous history will be reviewed and healing benefits will be discussed. Crystals can also be added to hold on to.

Elders will smudge the drums and perform a flute song as well as teach participants how to care for their drums.

“Drums are used for relaxation, mediation, for clearing energy in a space, and in sound therapy. Drums connect you with the heart beat of Mother Earth,” said Howard.

The class will last a few hours and completed drums will also need to cure afterwards. You can register for the 1 o’clock class before September 18, by calling 780-853-2999.
