Vermilion Outreach School moving into new home

Within a couple of weeks, the Vermilion Outreach School, which has bounced to a couple of locations over the years, will have a new permanent home at J.R. Robson.

Vermilion Outreach School is breaking into the school year at a temporary location, in a room on the east side of J.R. Robson School.

They eagerly await the completion of their new, permanent location that will take up the full north wing.

In the past 20 years, these renovations are the most the school has been able to cater their space to fit their needs.

“The contractor worked to create openness including a kitchen and colours, where a hallway is no longer a hallway but a living space,” said principal Barry Scinski.

He said the lease was coming up at their previous location and after assessing the cost over a series of years, they decided this option would serve them better in the long run.

Completely sectioned off with their own entrance, and some work to create an open space concept, staff and students are looking forward to their new home.

Work is expected to be completed on the project within the next 10–14 days.

Students will spend the first week or so in the temporary location and transition over and Scinski is thankful for the adaptability of the students.

He said part of the school’s philosophy includes showing the students they are cared for and working through any issues, supporting their needs and gaining their trust, so the students in turn gain confidence.

“Not everyone fits the mold and the Vermilion Outreach School gives students an alternative,” said Scinski.

“It’s been six months so we are extremely excited to see the students again and find out what’s going on in their lives, how they are coping, and help them move forward.”
