Parade of Hope running through Elk Point

Elk Point RCMP have come together in an effort to inspire hope in the community amidst a year filled with uncertainty with what they’re calling the Parade of Hope this Friday.

The event is being spearheaded by S/Sgt. Dave Henry, who felt the need to bring people together after seeing so many people becoming downtrodden.

“I hear nothing but bad news on TV, and everywhere I was getting called to I was seeing the glimmer of hope disappearing from people’s eyes,” said Henry.

“So a couple guys and I decided that we’re going to try something out of nowhere to get people out in their yards, and help create a sense of normality.”

Henry said that it was important to him that the event be something that would help inspire a sense of community–something usually provided by the town’s Canada Day celebrations–while also allowing for social distancing protocols.

Despite the RCMP’s heavy involvement in the event, Henry emphasized that it wasn’t about them but about bringing people together.

“This is a community thing. Let’s help each other. I want the focus to be on Elk Point and St. Paul County area,” said Henry. “I guess I also wanted to let the Lakeland know that the RCMP can do more than just give out tickets.”

While there aren’t any events planned upon the parade’s conclusion, Henry and the rest of Elk Point RCMP are encouraging families to get outside and enjoy the warm summer weather.

“I struggle. I feel for people because I see businesses closing, people unemployed, and I wanted to do something, even if it’s a small thing that’s 10 minutes. Because for that 10 minutes people are forgetting about COVID and forgetting unemployment — they can just feel happy and connected.”

The parade is set to begin at 2:00pm.
