Vermilion 4-H Sheep Show going virtual
The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club has been operating virtually this season and discussed their upcoming video, challenges of the year, and how they have benefited from participating.
Senior member, Tara Martin, said that instead of having a regular show like in other years that club members will be submitting videos of their projects and when complete, a compilation will be made available to the public.
Aside from having no championships at their club show, Vermilion 4-H Sheep members also typically participate in several open shows during the Vermilion Fair which is also cancelled.
This year, the club had 15 members including three cleaver members.
“The biggest part of it is the lack of togetherness,” said parent, Gerald Martin.
“You can get together on the computer, but there isn’t the same rivalry or fun.”
Tara participated in canine 4-H for three years, and has now participated in 4-H Sheep for 8 years with this being her last. Tara has been working with her lamb, Tenly, and can now scratch her head and lead her well when haltered.
Through the years, Tara has enjoyed being involved in 4-H because it has allowed her to meet new people, be around animals, and attend various events.
“4-H has also given me confidence through public speaking because I learned that my friends will support me even if I make an error,” said Tara.
It doesn’t matter what part of 4-H you are in, it is a very worthwhile club,” said Gerald.
Some of the members will also choose to go on to participate in the Vermilion River District’s Virtual Sheep Show from July 20 – 25.
Purchase of the animals can still be arranged by calling Paul Corbiere at 780-853-7858 or Brett Flanders at 780-580-0661.
