McDonald’s has officially bought land in Vermilion

Vermilion residents may not have to drive so far for a Big Mac of McFlurry.

The McDonald’s Corporation has purchased one-acre parcel located along Highway 41 and 42 Avenue in Vermilion.

Chief Administrative Officer, George Rogers made the announcement during Tuesday’s Town Council meeting.

“Sadly because of COVID-19, they’ve had to postpone their project, but they plan to begin construction as soon as the ground allows in the spring of 2021 meaning they will be open in the fall,” said Rogers.

Economic Development Coordinator, Mary Lee Prior plans to get a ‘coming soon’ sign put out in the next few weeks.

She hoping there will be some job fairs that go along with the 16-week project, which includes 14 weeks to build the fast-food drive-thru location and an additional training period before they open the doors.

“I think it’s going to be great for the Vermilion economy once they get going,” said Prior.

The Town was first approached by the company in February of 2019.

Because they are a larger franchise, Prior said that things take time and both entities had to meet some requirements.

For example, the Town had to look at subdividing the property and having utilities installed.

There are currently two parcels of land available for purchase within the same lot.

“They are very committed to our market and they will be here, just unfortunately not this year,” said Rogers.
