Trudeau announces ban on 1,500 models and variants of assault weapons

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a ban on “military-grade” assault weapons to begin immediately on Friday.

This includes the prohibition of 1,500 models and variants of firearms by ways of regulations.

An amnesty order is effective for the next two years for law-abiding owners of these weapons to turn them and the government is working on “fair compensation.”

The transport, use, or purchase of these weapons is prohibited.

Mass killings in Canadian history like Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 to the recent shooting Nova Scotia last week, were cited as reasons for the move.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said this measure is not meant to disrupt hunting or target shooting.

He said these weapons, “have no legitimate purpose.”

The Liberal Party promised some sort of buyback program in the last election.

The full list of these weapons has not been released.

“You don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer,” said Trudeau.
