Kehewin campground shut down by provincial government

Kehewin Provincial Recreation Area will be shut down the province.

The campground is the one on the east side of the lake adjacent to the highway. Located 36 kilometres south of Bonnyville on Highway 41.

The decision comes from the Alberta Government’s 2020 Budget which called for 20 full or partial closures of “very small and under-utilized” recreation areas.

It comes as cost-saving measure and the UCP believe they can save $5 million with these changes.

The government is also seeking partnerships to manage 164 parks, which include Mallaig Provincial Recreation Area, Muriel Lake Provincial Recreation Area, and Wolf Lake Provincial Recreation Area.

The changes take effect March 17.

Elks Campground Status

The Elks Campground on the west side of the lake, operated by the Elk Point Elks Club will remain open.
