Cold Lake Penguins hosting 3-on-3 street hockey tournament with $5000 grand prize

The Cold Lake Penguins rugby team is hosting a fundraising 3-on-3 street hockey tournament with a big prize for the winner.

The Penguins have hooked up with Kidsport Bonnyville for the 3-on-3 tournament on Apr. 24-26 behind the Energy Centre where teams will vie for a $5000 grand prize.

“We were kind of brainstorming different ways how we can raise some funds and it was a way that my rugby teams back in Saskatchewan raised some funds for a team to do some tournaments abroad and whatnot. So we thought it might be a good idea,” said Nick Campbell, one of the tournament organizers.

The games will be split into two 20-minute halfs with a five-minute intermission.

Teams will be comprised of seven players, two lines of three and a goaltender.

The entry fee is $300.

Proceeds will be going to support Kidsport Bonnyville and the Penguins rugby club.

“I think it’s a good charity to get involved. A lot of kids don’t have the same opportunity as other kids and still are great athletes and could have the potential to be great, but sometimes need the chance,” he said.

Hawk I’s Liquor, Kudo Energy, and Frontline Automation are key sponsors for the event.

Boys and girls youth rugby registrations are happening now. The season begins April 23.

“Everyone has your back on the team. It’s more of a family sport, social sport rather than like a real competitive sport.”
