One dead, two police injured, in Lloydminster on Sunday
One person is dead following shots fired from police in an altercation on Sunday afternoon.
According to the police, Lloydminster RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle in the Lloydminster area on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.
RCMP members located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.
Police said an altercation occurred that resulted in an RCMP member shooting their pistol, as the vehicle was able to flee the area.
At approximately 2:00pm, the vehicle was located by RCMP members in the central area of Lloydminster.
That’s when another altercation occurred that resulted in another RCMP officer firing their pistol.
The male driver of the vehicle, who was not identified in the press release, was pronounced dead police say, and the female passenger was taken into custody without incident.
The female passenger was not injured and remains in police custody.
Two RCMP members were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police from Lloydminster, Kitscoty, Vermillion, Wainwright, Maidstone, and Onion Lake RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Service, and RCMP Traffic Services assisted with the case.
The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting and the actions of police.
The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the confrontation with police.
