In Elk Point: ATCO rates rising, water meter replacement
ATCO rates rise
The Town of Elk Point has agreed to increase the local franchise fee charged to ATCO Electric for the use of Municipal lands for its power lines effective January 1st, 2020.
According to a notice posted by the Town in local media, the increase “has been estimated at $1.72 per month based on the average consumption of 625 kwh per 30 days.”
Citizens are invited to bring forward concerns to CAO Ken Gwozdz until October 15.
During the summer, ATCO proposed that three power poles and LED lighting be installed in the area of 50th Street and 50th Avenue, resulting in an unbudgeted expenditure for the Town of $2726.55, to be taken from the Public Works Street operating budget.
Tender for Water Meter Replacement
The Town of Elk Point has been phasing out traditional residential water meters to be replaced by e-read meters and has 386 new meters still to be installed.
A tender package for contractors interested in completing the process will be advertised Nov. 1, with closing date Dec. 2 and contract award date Dec. 9. Work is to be done in 2020.
Mayor for a Day
Recreation Director Cristin Tchir presented the idea of a contest for grade six students with the winner following Mayor Lorne Young in his duties for one day. Council supports the idea.
Deputy Mayor Debra McQuinn stated at the local council meeting on Sept. 23 that it would provide “an important twist on governance” to help children understand municipal affairs.
