Road map to will keep M.D. “accountable for road development in the future,” said Reeve

The M.D. of Bonnyville has finalized a road classification map that is meant to make long-term road maintenance easier to manage.

The map was approved at last Wednesday’s M.D. council meeting and lays out what roads see the heaviest usage and the condition they should kept to.

This will guide the municipality’s future road construction, but also get away from M.D. council solely dictating what work gets done on what roads,

“It goes to long term planning which is what we’re trying to push towards,” said Reeve Greg Sawchuk on The Morning After.

“As well as being accountable for road development in the future, so it has some sort of plan instead of just going year by year by the whim of council. This puts in place a hard road map as to what the arteries are going to be in the M.D. and those roads that are more heavily used are going to be built to a higher grade,” he said.

M.D. roads are broken down into five different classes: Class 1 arterial road that carries over 1500 vehicles per day, Class 1A industrial arterial road that carries over 2000 vehicles per day, Class 2 collector road between 200-1500 vehicles per day, Class 3 collector road which sees 200-500 vehicles per day, and Class 4 and 5 local roads with a lower proportion of traffic.
