It was a big camp week for those who don’t typically get the opportunity.

WJS Canada Bonnyville/Cold Lake Community Services ran Camp Ona’s Dream at Camp St. Louis just outside of Bonnyville for adults with developmental disabilities from July 29-Aug. 2.

Leona Heisler, program manager, with WJS Bonnyville/Cold Lake Community Services said it was the first camp they’ve offered of this kind.

“We wanted to make it cost-effective,” said Heisler.

“Our individuals don’t have a lot of money. And also we thought we could run a very good camp. It’s kind of something that we thought of for years, and it was finally a reality to be able to do that.”

“Camp St. Louis was wonderful for us as well. They really accommodated us.”

Roughly 50 adults took part in the camp from the Bonnyville-area including some who travelled from St. Paul and Westlock to come out for the week.

WJS supports adults that suffer from development disabilities like down syndrome, autism or fetal alcohol syndrome.

“We have some group homes in Bonnyville and then we support some individuals that live either on their own or with family members. We’re trying to increase their quality of life and achieve their goals,” said Heisler.

Campers enjoyed the typical lake activities, except swimming in Moose Lake because of the blue-green algae.

WJS hopes to make this an annual camp.

Heisler thanks Camp St. Louis, Denis Fagnan for cutting out 55 birdhouses, Video Game Party for providing games for one afternoon, Alvin Green for providing his pontoon boat for lake trips, Deacon Ryan, and volunteers from the military who helped run activities and wash dishes.
