Logan Gorst wins Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby

It was a highly emotional night as the finals of the 2019 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby  were run on Sunday night. In a historic all Saskatchewan championship final, Logan Gorst, driving the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino Outfit, and along with outriders Casey Knight, Chance Flad and Brendan Nolin won the championship final from barrel number 1 in heat number 9, by 43 one-hundredths of a second over Todd Baptiste who placed 2nd from barrel number 3. Luke Tournier placed third from barrel position number 4, while Vern Nolin ended up placing fourth from barrel position number 2. It’s the first time that Logan Gorst has won the GMC Rangeland Derby Championship, and a first for outriders Casey Knight and Brendan Nolin.

On the night, Logan Gorst’s championship run of 1:10.87 was also the fastest time on the night, 42 one-hundredths of a second better than Kris Molle. Todd Baptiste placed third, followed by B.J Carey and Luke Tournier filling out the top five on the final night of competition. The night also marked the final races of retiring chuckwagon driver Ray Mitsuing.

As well, the Calgary Stampede’s Safe Drive Award was won by Logan Gorst for being the least penalized drivers over the first 8 nights of the Rangeland Derby. Rory Gervais was named the Calgary Stampede’s Outstanding Outrider for the fifth consecutive year, and Danny Ringuette received the Orville Strandquist Memorial Award for the top rookie driver at the 2019 GMC Rangeland Derby.
