News from Elk Point Council Chambers for March 26th, 2019

Micro Cannabis Incubator

A delegation attended the March 25 regular meeting requesting permission to develop a Micro Cannabis Cultivation Facility in the industrial area. The Town has posted a notice on its Facebook page and on its website asking “any person claiming to be affected by the decision of the Development Officer” to submit a Notice of Appeal.

The development application and notice are the first steps in establishing this business. Permission still needs to be granted through Health Canada.

Support for recreation facilities

Town Council recently entered into an agreement to sell the curling rink to the Elk Point Curling Rink Association for $1. The building had previously been owned by the association, but was claimed by the Town a number of years ago through tax recovery.

The Town has also entered into an agreement with the Elk Point and District Lions Club. For one dollar, the Lions have purchased the water reservoir south of town to be used as a recreational fishing pond.

Sweet deal for a new house in an old area

The Town received a letter requesting implementation of the new tax incentive policy for an infill house recently constructed at 5310 48 Avenue. Council noted that the house is within the R2 residential development district and qualifies for a cancellation of the municipal portion of taxes for one year. In effect, for upgrading the property in the downtown area, the owner has been rewarded with a 50% reduction in total residential taxes for 2019. The policy allows Council to extend the tax incentive for one further year, at its discretion.
