Portage athletes win in the classroom and in the community
Portage College would like to congratulate our student-athletes for an impressive year in both academics and athletics. In addition to playing hockey, golf, curling, and soccer, our student-athletes volunteered hundreds of hours in their communities and posted some truly outstanding results in their academic programs.
The remarkable Grade Point Average (GPA) results for our student-athletes showed that these individuals are committed to both athletics and academics. The entire Athletic department posted a Grade Point Average of 2.81 (where a 4.0 is the highest score possible). Most impressively, 25 out of 48 student-athletes had a GPA greater than 3.0.
While excelling in the classroom, our student-athletes were also involved in the community. They volunteered more than 450 hours on top of their full-time studies and practice and game commitments. During the course of the year, they helped with Lac La Biche County Family Fun Day, Terry Fox Runs in the community and schools, many grade school events, minor hockey tryouts and conditioning camps, officiating minor hockey, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Santa Claus events, College events and the Junior Curling program.
Jim Knight, Manager of Athletics and Recreation at Portage College, spoke at the Athletics Awards Banquet on March 12 about the team’s dedication. “Thank you for your commitment to both academics, athletics and community volunteerism,” he said. “Continue to work hard over the next seven weeks in your studies and then have a great summer. Remember we have lots to look forward to when you arrive back in the fall.”
Knight also thanked College staff and community members for volunteering their time to help run Game Nights.
“We have the most volunteers at our games than any other school in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference,” he said proudly.
Knight also acknowledged and thanked the sponsors, without whom it would be impossible to run a top-notch Athletics program. The College and the Athletics department look forward to working with sponsors next year to find ways to enhance the student experience of all our athletes.
