Men’s bonspiel raises nearly $1700 for Food Bank

The 2019 men’s bonspiel was a big success.

After three fun days of curling, the bonspiel raised $1675 for the Bonnyville Food Bank through their door prizes.

“When we went out to the community we told them we’d be using this towards going to the food bank. That really got people to open their pockets up,” said Colin Hanusz, president of the Bonnyville Curling Club.

“We had 17 teams out for our men’s bonspiel. It’s been a really great event. We’re just wrapping up the final game right now, the B event is just finishing up. It’s been a great weekend.”

After calls that the food bank was struggling in the new year, executive director Pauline said the donations are coming in almost daily.

“This community comes together for the less fortunate and I am so thankful and humbled and grateful. On behalf of the Friendship Centre thanks for this, it’s going to go a long way.

“The donations are amazing. They’re coming in daily. Businesses are challenging businesses and they’re trying to outdo each other. Our shelves are getting full. But my client list is still growing, that will not change. As more jobs are being lost in this community, my client list is only going to go up,” she said.

Hanusz thanks the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the event happen.

“A big thank you for a lot of volunteers, our men’s league came together to set this all up. It was led by Riel Hebert. He did a lot of work. Lance Marchand and about ten all of us. It’s been great to work together to put this on. We went around the community to get door prizes we’ll be able to use for our raffles and use the proceeds for the Food Bank.”
