StFX bowl game tomorrow in Quebec a family affair for Fagnan’s

Two football players from Bonnyville are playing in the U-Sports national semi-final tomorrow for St. Francis Xavier.
Jeremy and Isaac Fagnan, linebacker and receiver, respectively, will both suit up in tomorrow’s U-Sports Uteck Bowl for the Xmen against perennial contenders Laval Rouge et Or.
“It’s pretty incredible because no one that I know of from Bonnyville has played in this sort of game,” said Mickey Fagnan, Jeremy and Isaac’s dad and coach of the Bonnyville Bandits.
The winner advances to the 54th Vanier Cup – the biggest football game in Canadian university football. That is next weekend in Quebec City hosted by Laval.
“They’ve been starting and it looks like they’ve been a factor in these games,” he said.
StFX has been on a roll lately. They’ve won five in a row thanks to their dominating rushing game. However, they’ll be in tough against the Rouge et Or, who are undefeated, and never lost a bowl game at home.
StFX are representing the AUS conference after beating St. Mary’s 33-9 in the Loney Bowl.
Isaac Fagnan is in his second season and was named the StFX Football Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 15. He earned seven receptions for 125 yards including a 32 yard catch on the one-yard line that set-up a fourth quarter touchdown.
The following week he earned Special Teams Player of the Week honours. He had five kickoff returns for 119 yards, averaging 23.8 yards/return. On offense he also had four receptions for 45 yards.
This might be Jeremy’s last game in an Xmen uniform. It’s his fourth season with the club, and afterwards he’ll have his eye on trying to make some noise for the CFL combine, where scouts evaluate the collegiate talent graduating from school.
“It’s pretty incredible because it goes to show that a kid who didn’t start playing football until he was 14 can still make it,” said Mickey.
Mickey’s next oldest son, Silas, has received university scholarship offers and will make a decision in the near future, he says.
The game against Laval kicks off at 10:30am mountain time and can be watched on Sportsnet 360.
