LCSD Presents Outstanding Community Partner Award to Portage College
At the Lakeland Catholic School District June board meeting Chairperson of the Board, Mary Anne Penner presented the Lakeland Catholic Outstanding Community Partner Award to Guy Gervais, Vice President of Academic at Portage College.
The Lakeland Catholic Outstanding Community Partner Award was established to recognize our partners who have gone above and beyond in supporting education in our communities.
One award is given annually in each of our communities and one is awarded district-wide. This year LCSD has selected Portage College to receive the district-wide award.
Portage College was chosen because they have excelled in supporting innovative programming for students in all of our communities. They have provided a broad range of experiential learning opportunities to our students to broaden their horizons.
This year students from all LCSD high school completed University exploratory learning opportunities with Portage College strengthening the connection between high school and post-secondary including: University Science Exposure and Environmental Science Exposure.
Students from Holy Family Catholic School visited the Portage College Heavy Equipment Operator Simulation Lab in Boyle. Students were able to work on three different pieces of equipment in the simulation lab and then tour the field to learn more about the equipment.
Partnering with Portage College to offer new dual credit learning opportunities means that our students will be even more prepared for life after high school.
The new dual credit initiative that we are working on with Portage will allow students to engage in Heavy Equipment Technician, Electrical and Robotics courses. Through this dual credit learning opportunity, students will explore different pathways between trades and technologies and the possibilities that result by connecting them. Pre-Employment Heavy Equipment Technician opens doors for students to apprentice and challenge the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Exam – Period 1. We are working on electrical and robotics courses whereby students taking the courses will obtain both high school and college credits.
LCSD is so grateful to Portage College for partnering with us to open students’ hearts, minds and doors for future career and post-secondary pathways
