Reeve Updates on Crime

Municipal District (MD) of Bonnyville Reeve Greg Sawchuk was at the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment presentation that took place at the Lakeland Inn on March 29, 2018.

He was there to answer questions and to update the audience on changes that have been implemented in the MD of Bonnyville since the first Regional Crime Forum that was held back in December 2017.

He stated another peace officer had been hired. And last week, staff from the Edmonton Police Department came out and worked with their officers.

“They went out and looked at the farms and homes and businesses in the rural area and then gave the owners a report on how to make the environment safer.” Sawchuk added the MD of Bonnyville Council has been backing the Rural Crime Watch, and helped distribute extra radios from the fire department to the Citizens on Patrol in the area.

During the first Regional Crime Forum, Sawchuk saw a lot of people raise their hands when they were asked how many people had not reported a crime.

On the evening of March 29, 2018, Sawchuk reminded the audience to report crimes. “If something happens, you got to report it. The RCMP need those numbers.“ He added, “The difference between Mayor Craig Copeland’s constituents and mine are most of mine have guns. We have these forums to try and talk people down a bit. We don’t want people to take things into their own hands.”
