At the Cold Lake Corporate Priorities Committee meeting on March 20th, 2018 it was announced that a letter was received from Minister Shannon Phillips in response to a January 2018 letter that was mailed to the Minister of Alberta Environment & Parks concerning expansion of the campgrounds in the region.
The Ministry recognized Cold Lake and the surrounding area as a popular spot for camping and recreation. She stated they will be exploring the idea of expanding the Cold Lake Provincial Park camping facilities and adding a new interpretive centre there.
The Minister will be consulting with Cold Lake First Nations and the Berry Point Elders Working Group. After consultations the decision to expand the English Bay Provincial Recreation Area will be made. The expansion at English Bay would include the addition of three camping loops, and a beach-day use area.
In 2017, there were 7060 nights of occupancy at the Cold Lake Provincial Park, and 1671 nights of occupancy at English Bay.
City of Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland stated, “It would be good to have more sites to help increase tourism in the area.”
