Sherry Bower Gagne handed in her resignation as Councillor of the Town of Elk Point Monday afternoon, reported Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Ken Gwozdz.

In the resignation letter, moving to another community was cited as the reasoning for Bower Gagne’s resignation.

The resignation comes five months after the general election, which saw Bower Gagne take a Councillor seat in her first run in politics. Bower Gagne served on many boards, including the County of St. Paul & Town of Elk Point FCSS, Further Education Council and the Lakeland Doctor Recruitment Board. “She is a real go-getter and we will miss her,” said Gwozdz.

Gwozdz confirmed that the Town of Elk Point will be holding a by-election, “it’s mandatory as per the MGA (Municipal Government Act).” The MGA calls for a by-election if the term is less than half-over.

There are some tentative dates for the by-election:

  • May 22nd, 2018: Nomination Day
  • June 12th, 2018: Early polls
  • June 19th, 2018: By-election Day

Gwozdz estimated the by-election was cost the community $1,200 to $2,500.

In addition to being a Councillor for the Town, Sherry Bower Gagne, is employed at FG Miller Jr/Sr High School where she works as the Family Liaison/FNMI Worker. There is no report if Bower-Gagne has resigned from her position at the school.
