Notes from the County of St. Paul
What you need to know from the regular board meeting
Mallaig arena project
Big plans are in the works for the Mallaig arena. Amanda Amyotte and Jay St. Arnault attended the council meeting to request support in renovating the facility. The total anticipated cost is
$750 000, which covers $500 000 to install a new ice plant and $250 000 to extend the lobby, upgrade change rooms, add doors and signage, and switch to LED lights. For immediate use, the County provided $50 000 from its 2018 budget, but also approved $187 000 from the 2019 budget to be applied to a matching grant.
Seniors travel free and other support from the County
Thanks to transportation grants of $1000 each, St. Paul Senior Citizens’ Club and St. Lina Senior Citizens’ Club will be traveling on educational and cultural trips throughout the year. Both groups recently took a bus to Elk Point for the annual dinner theatre performance.
The County donated the use of two powered sites for two nights’ stay at any Municipal Campground as prizes to be given away at the St. Paul Gymnastics Club’s Mexican Fiesta fundraiser on May 5.
The Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club will be erecting metal signs to indicate the trailhead near Range Road 95 and Township Road 590. Enjoy the last few weeks of snow on the XC ski trails!
It’s the end of the winter sports’ season, and a number of local youth teams have demonstrated their skills at provincial championships. The County has provided $500 to each of these teams for representing our zone: St Paul Regional High School curling team, Elk Point PeeWee hockey team, Elk Point Midget hockey team, and Mallaig Atoms hockey team.
Frog Lake Fire Agreement
With the Town of Elk Point, the County is updating the agreement for emergency firefighting services to provide support to Frog Lake when needed. The current agreement is from 2002.
Survey sez…
Area residents completed and returned over 1000 parks and recreation needs analysis surveys by the February 23 deadline. Stakeholder groups will meet with the consultant, RC Strategies to identify common concerns and to determine next steps.
