On Thursday, March 8, 2018, Spencer Holmes will be hosting a Toastmasters Demo Night at 4 Wing at their Club 41 All Ranks Mess.
Holmes said, “My interest was first piqued when I was in Air Cadets at a young age, and Toastmasters had put on a speaking competition. I was always a shy kid growing up and I wanted to have the ability to speak and lead in hopes of one day becoming a squadron commander.”
There are many valuable skills that Holmes has gained from being a part of the organization, he said. “the skills I learned in Toastmasters helped me win the local squadron level competition, and then I went on to the regional competition level. I haven’t had much opportunity in my early years to present myself in a public speaking setting; however with the skills I learned from when I was younger, I can spot areas where my public speaking could improve.”
“This is why I want to start a local club right here in Cold Lake; to not only improve upon myself, but to help others in our community.”
Holmes hopes that the event will motivate twenty people to become chartered members, but for the purpose of the demonstration, he wants to have the word spread as far as it can go. He added, “If ever a person had stage anxiety or anxiety about speaking out in a group, large or small, this organization develops skills to conquer those fears, and handle any public speaking scenario with confidence. A Toastmasters club creates a supportive atmosphere in a community of learners”.
Jason Karras from Toastmasters District 99, Division E Director will be helping to mentor and sponsor the new club until it is a strong, healthy club. Meetings typically run about two hours, but for the demonstration meeting, will run between 30 to 45 minutes, allowing more time for questions.
The free demo night is being held to show how Toastmasters is conducted, and to answer any questions people might have about the group. Club 41, All Ranks Mess is on 41 Beaverlodge Road in the red conference room.
Along with a Toastmasters Thursday in Cold Lake, there is in Bonnyville at 7:00 pm, on Wednesday, at the Neighbourhood Inn, Alberta Room and in St. Paul at 7:30 pm, on Wednesday the 21st, at the Library. The public is welcome to drop into any of the events to find out if Toastmasters is right for you.
