T-Birds beat Wheat Kings at home, take lead in series

After splitting the first two games of round two on the road against Killam, the T-Birds came back to Frog Lake to host game three. Frog Lake beat the Wheat Kings in the first game of the series on Wednesday with a tight 7-6 victory and then lost the second game on Friday 7-4.

Back home on Saturday, Darian Gamble scored the lone goal in the first period to put the T-Birds up 1-0. Moving into the second period, Frog Lake crushed the Wheat Kings with dominating offense. Tayon Metzler, Michael Cardinal, and captain Josh Swampy all scored within 90 seconds of each other, giving the T-Birds a massive 4-0 lead halfway through the game.

Frog Lake held off Killam on a four-minute double minor for tripping shortly thereafter, but Clay Lang finally put the Wheat Kings up on the board with their first and only goal of the night right at the end of the second period.

In the final frame, the two teams were relatively evenly-matched until Killam’s Colten Leslie took off after Frog Lake’s Jamal Daniels, hitting him with a cheap and illegal hit to the head. Daniels went down, and the hit started a huge fight. Penalties all went in favour of Frog Lake, with Killam getting two game misconducts and a five-minute major for Leslie’s hit to the head.

Frog Lake wasted no time in taking advantage of the long power play afforded to them. Courage Omeasoo scored on a play set up by Swampy and Ryder Prue. That goal was scored 15 seconds into the man advantage, giving Frog Lake still nearly five full minutes to score again.

They did score again, about a minute and a half later. Prue set up the play with Cardinal, who got the puck over to Tristan Calliou who scored the T-Birds’ sixth and final goal of the night.

Game four takes place on Monday night in Frog Lake. The T-Birds have a chance to take a crucial 3-1 lead in the series at home before they hit the road for game five in Killam.
