Blizzards represent at Winter Games; Sylvestre brings Home Hardware
Four members of the Cold Lake Blizzards Alpine Ski Racing Club represented the club and zone 7 last weekend in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for the Alberta Winter Games. Benjamin Sylvestre, Chiara Harris, Anick Levesque and Nathan Sylvestre had an experience of a lifetime, competing with athletes from across Alberta at the games.
The games hosted right zones, with the Cold Lake region represented in zone 7; there were 22 sports played out during the three-day weekend. The four members of the Blizzards competed in Alpine Skiing with two giant slalom races on Saturday, two slalom races on Sunday, and a combined time team event on Monday.
The highlight of the weekend included silver and bronze medals for Nathan in the giant slalom races, and a bronze in the first of the slalom races. Although, the other Blizzards athletes did not medal at the games they gained a lot of experience and are looking forward to a chance to represent their club next time around.
The Blizzards train at Kinosoo Ridge Snow Resort during the winter. There are 40+ members of the club, many of whom compete in the Nancy Greene Alpine Race Series, at ski hills across Alberta. Benjamin Sylvestre, Chiara Harris and Nathan Sylvestre all compete in a level higher than the Nancy Greene, which is a provincial series. The club is next headed to Jasper for the Junior Olympics.
