Crop Haven is holding their annual scrapbooking retreat March 23 to 25, 2018 at the Military Family Resource Centre on the 4 Wing base in Cold Lake. Volunteer committee member, Michele McGuire, says they have space for 80 people. “We have come close to those numbers in previous years.”
The theme this year, Deep Crop, revolves around being underwater. The event, which is held in the MFRC assembly hall, attracts scrapbookers from Red Deer, Saskatchewan, and the Calgary area. Vendors come from as far away as Edmonton and Lloydminster. Along with a six foot table, the group provides supper, a gift bag of scrapbooking supplies, snacks, and chances to enter challenges. “Last year, we had close to 1000 projects completed that weekend,” said McGuire.
McGuire notices that people come to the event for several reasons. “Some people come each year and they ask to sit together. I have seen people scrapbooking their vacation pictures; reliving those memories. Some people scrapbook their children’s lives, or their grandchildren’s lives; their work, their pets, or their hobbies.”
There are two kinds of scrapbooking. Paper and digital. McGuire (who started out as a rubber stamper and card maker) does both kinds; but she finds her digital pages more elaborate and cost effective. On most months (excluding July, August and December), the group holds monthly, smaller crops. “For me, when I leave the house I take my supplies and enjoy the social aspect of the crop. It’s a time I can devote to my hobby.” Contact the MFRC to pre-register for the weekend.
