Cold Lake’s Festival of Words

Close to 300 people attended the Cold Lake Community Learning Centre’s annual Festival of Words which took place at the Heritage Hall in Cold Lake on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The event is held each year to celebrate Family Literacy Day.

This year’s theme, Come Dressed as Your Favourite Book Character, brought out Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and several Paper Bag Princess fans. Taking part in the event were organizations such as Cold Lake Victim Services, the Cold Lake Public Library, Kids’ Time Out Play Program, Portage College, BOOM 95.3, and Cold Lake and District FCSS.

After visiting the literacy stations set up around the hall, attendees could participate in the spelling bees held in the North Branch library. Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland officiated the spelling bees for children, teens, and adults. Along with free pizza and cotton candy, there were prize draws every fifteen minutes for games, books, and toys. Near the end of the event, dancers from the Pirouette School of Dance performed a variety of dance routines for the crowd.
