On January 23rd, the St. Paul RCMP Detachment received a call of an armed robbery at the Ashmont Convenience Store. RCMP quickly responded to discover that it was not an armed robbery, but a case of shoplifting.
A male left the store, without paying, with two bottle of liquor. Bystanders were able to apprehend the man and hold him down until the police arrived. RCMP report there was a twelve minute time period from when the call was received to when they were able to respond. During that time, citizens held the suspect for the police.
Arrested was a 28 year old man from Saddle Lake. The male was not name due to charges not yet sworn before the courts. Charges of theft under $5,000, and failing to comply with a probation order (x2) are pending. The man is scheduled to appear in St. Paul Provincial court on March 22nd, 2018.
