Unauthorized Driver

On December 1st, just after 6:00 pm, RCMP were on routine patrol and queried a licence plate from Saskatchewan. It came back that licence and registration was expired. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver was also found to be a disqualified driver.

The driver, 55 year old male from Big Island Lake First Nations, SK, was issued with tickets for driving while unauthorized, operating a motor vehicle without valid registration, failing to provide a peace officer with an operator’s licence. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

The public is reminded that driving without insurance, registration, or a licence combined fines are over $2,500. According to Alberta Traffic Law: If your vehicle is uninsured and you drive or park it on any public or private road, alley or parking lot, you may be charged with “Driving without Insurance.” You will receive a fine of no less than $2,500 for a first offence and a mandatory jail term if you are charged a second time within 1 year. Two offences of driving without valid insurance within a five year period leads to a fine between $5000 and $20,000, with a sentence of 60 days to 6 months in jail if the fine is not paid. A driver’s licence suspension can also be ordered.If you are stopped by a police officer in Alberta and charged with no registration, you face a fine of $230. The Registrar may also cancel the registration for every motor vehicle owned by you if you are found guilty of a conviction relating to registration and insurance.
