Sentencing – Derek Balciunas, 28 yrs old of Cold Lake

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm, Mischief Over $5000.00 & Assault With a Weapon.  He received 90 days jail to be served intermittently on weekends, a 5 year driving prohibition, a DNA Order, a Lifetime Firearms Prohibition, Restitution $385.00 & 18 months probation.

May 13, 2017 at 6:23 a.m. police received (2) 911 calls in relation to a single motor vehicle collision. It was later reported that someone had tried to run a person over and went through the wall of a residence as a result.

Police arrived on scene and observed a motor vehicle stuck inside the wall of residential property in Cold Lake North. The Victim was sitting close by with moderate injury to his forehead and neck. The Victim was bleeding profusely and was transported to the Cold Lake hospital for treatment.

The Accused had fled the scene and was later arrested. Investigation revealed that an argument led the Accused to get into his vehicle and make an attempt to run the Victim over.

The Victim bounced off of the front hood of the vehicle, rolled over the front hood, hit his head on the windshield and was thrown over to the side. The momentum of the vehicle caused it to go through the wall of the residential property.

There was a female and a child sleeping in the bedroom (the exterior wall of the bedroom was the wall through which the vehicle had gone through). The female and the child did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
