A Cold Lake RCMP member was assaulted during a traffic stop. The officer had witnessed a couple of people staggering as they were walking and witnessed them entering a vehicle. The officer then approached the vehicle to arrest the driver for impaired care & control of a motor vehicle, Constable Dave Hart of the Cold Lake Detachment explains, “during that investigation he was assaulted. Both individuals were heavily intoxicated; one individual was arrested immediately for (impaired) care & control. During the investigation, the second individual tried to take his police car, which that person was impaired and also charged [with impaired care & control].”

“Part of our overall initiative for the Detachment is focusing on impaired driving. With us getting closer to Christmas,” the RCMP is a supporter of Operation Red Nose in Cold Lake. The free service runs on weekends during the month of December, on weekends, until New Year’s Eve. The service provides a safe ride home for you and your vehicle.

The three person operation will drive to where you are. Two volunteers, a driver and chaperone, will drive you home, in your vehicle, while the third volunteer guides the way. Once home safe, the volunteers leave your vehicle and take the guide car back to Operation Red Nose head quarters or to another call.

Last year, Operation Red Nose gave 333 safe rides home in 12 nights. The service runs through grants and donations. If you would like to assist gas cards and food gift cards are needed to assist the volunteers that are operating the service. To find out more contact Dave Zimmerman at 780-594-3302 ext 3.

For a safe, free ride home, call Operation Red Nose at 780-812-5880. The service is free; however donations are always welcome.
