Goggles in September kicks off C.L.A.S.S. season

Goggles in September

Goggles in September is a fundraiser in support of the Cold Lake Alpine Ski Society. The fundraiser takes place this Saturday (Sept 30) at Kinosoo Ridge Ski Resort. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Supper will be served at 6 p.m., and will be a home-style German spread catered by Valerie Grau. The night will be a casual event aimed at having fun, and getting geared up for another winter at the Ridge! For those who wish to indulge in some craft brew, a safe ride home will be provided.

“We’re having basically a casual atmosphere. You can dress in casual clothes. We are encouraging people to wear their favourite pair of ski goggles, in celebration of the upcoming ski season. Val at the ski hill is catering a beautiful German meal for us with Rouladen, black forest cake, and a choclate fountain later on. We also have a silent auction that is filled with unique pieces that are winter themed.” Collette Sylvestre explains.

C.L.A.S.S.

The Cold Lake Alpine Ski Society, and their kids race teams (Kinosoo Blizzards) have been racing for a long time. The Blizzards are a completely volunteer run organization. The Goggles in September event will go a long way in ensuring the success of the team this year. Some kids from the team compete on the provincial mountain circuit, and train during weekday evenings. Less experienced kids usually compete on the regional circuit which sees travel as far as Jasper.

“We are a non-profit. Basically we are trying to raise money for training purposes because we train in the evenings during the week. We are also raising funds for new equipment, timing equipment, and ski jackets. As well as coach development. We are also hosting our third annual Alberta sanctioned Nancy Greene race. at the beginning of February.” Sylvestre says.

The team has earned the nickname “The Little Team That Could” after having success over the past few years despite being solely volunteer, and a smaller sized club.

Nancy Greene Races

The Nancy Greene Ski League is a national program, inaugurated shortly after Nancy Greene Raine’s Gold Medal win at the 1968 Grenoble Olympic Winter Games. Since then, the program has been successful in introducing thousands of children to alpine skiing. Many of Canada’s top international skiers received their early training in Nancy Greene Ski League programs. The program introduces children to basic ski techniques and skills, basic safety rules, and teamwork.  Enjoyment of the sport and the mountain environment is also emphasized.  Alberta clubs are organized into 2 distinct divisions, the North and South Zone.  We are in the North Zone, along with Drumheller, Edmonton Ski Club, Fort McMurray, Nitehawk, Parkland, Rabbit Hill, Red Deer, Snow Valley, Sunridge, and Valley. – From ColdLakeBilzzardsAlpine.ca
