Wildcats out of town
There was a lot of sports action in Bonnyville this past weekend. The Scott MacDonald Memorial, Lakeland Credit Union’s 3 on 3 road hockey tournament, and the Pontiacs home opener kept residents busy with sports action. A senior volleyball team of local kids from Ecole Notre Dame High School weren’t in town for all that. They were too busy blowing away the competition at their second tournament of the year in Vermilion.
Pools play proves easy for Wildcats
The field of teams in the Vermilion tournament was refreshing. The NDHS Wildcats faced a lot of teams they haven’t seen much, if at all, of. The tournament took place at St. Jerome’s High School. The Wildcats faced Dewberry, Marwayne and Paradise Valley in day one action. The Wildcats breezed through the group play, not even dropping a set.
“It brought us first in our pool. How the tournament works, is that all the other pools’ teams that placed first got put into a power pool.” Coach Tyler Collins explains.
Power pool play
The following morning, the Wildcats played Holy Rosary from Lloydminster. Holy Rosary proved to be the toughest game, as the Wildcats finally dropped a set. St. Mary’s and St. Jerome’s (Host) also fell to the Wildcats high powered court. The three victories put them first in the power pool. They then moved into quarter-final action.
Playoffs go well
The first match up saw Wainwright as the opponent. NDHS beat them in straight sets. The semis was against La Loche, and was another straight sets victory. That set up a rematch against Holy Rosary in the Gold Medal game. The Wildcats pulled out a two sets to one victory to win their first gold of the season.
“We won the first set 25-16, which is pretty good. The second set was a lot closer, they won the second set 25-21. It set up the third set. It was back and forth the entire way, and finally we just managed to get on a nice little roll. We won 15-12. Won the gold medal, and had to work for it.” Coach Collins says.
