The 2018 Cold Lake Air Show is taking place July 21 and 22, 2018. At the Regular Meeting of the Cold Lake City Council on September 12, 2017, 4 Wing Cold Lake requested sponsorship of $125,000. This is up from the $75,000 that was provided in 2016. The extra money captures the cost of the fees associated with travel, fuel, and accommodation for the performers that are being brought into the area.
Cold Lake City Councillor Darrell MacDonald would like to see the money be used for structural purposes. He stated, “I would rather see us pave that back road onto the base.” Mayor Craig Copeland explained that although the price had jumped up, the base was trying to capture the true costs of the performers. He stated, “I don’t have a problem with the request. It’s a big jump but it brings ten to twenty thousand people into the community. It shows off the military.”
City of Cold Lake Councillor Bob Buckle remembered the journey that 4 wing took with the City to secure funding from the Air Weapons Range. “This is something we should partner with for 4 Wing. I feel like we are using the funds 4 Wing helped us get. We should give back to 4 Wing by honouring a partnership that goes way back.”
City of Cold Lake Councillor Vicky Lefebvre had no problems with sponsoring the event, and she was thankful for how 4 Wing involved other businesses and groups during the previous air show. Cold Lake City Councillor Duane Lay supported the sponsorship. “This is affordable entertainment for the family,” he said.
Council passed a motion to authorize the City of Cold Lake to be the “Performer Sponsor” in the amount of $125,000 + GST ($131,250inclusive of GST) for the civilian performer contract fees for the 2018 Cold Lake Air Show to be funded from the 2017 Contingency.
