New Changes for Fireworks in Elk Point
The Safety Codes Act established a unifying administration to ten safety disciplines which each have their own safety codes to keep the public safe in the places they live, work and play.
The Fire discipline of Safety Services is responsible for establishing and interpreting the Alberta Fire Code, standards and respective regulations under the Safety Codes Act. Municipal Affairs works in partnership with the Safety Codes Council to develop and provide relevant information to the fire industry, building owners and authorities having jurisdiction.
The Town of Elk Point has a Fire QMP (Quality Management Plan). A Quality Management Plan is a document in which the municipality describes the discipline and extent of safety services it intends to provide when it becomes accredited. A Quality Management Plan consists of an outline of safety policies and standards and the process for ensuring compliance, e.g., the number of inspections and at what stages, plans review (if applicable), verification of compliance, resolution of non-compliance (variances and orders), just to name a few.
A By-Law has been developed regarding the storage, possession, purchase, handling and discharging of Fireworks for vendors within the Town of Elk Point. The By-Law is being brought to Council on Sept 11, 2017 for approval. What this will mean for vendors who currently sell fireworks is that they’ll need to apply for a permit and have the facility inspected and approved by the Safety Codes Officer to ensure the vendor and the Town of Elk Point is in compliance with the QMP.
