Cold Lake Public Works wins award for second time

The City of Cold Lake was named the winner of the Canadian Public Works Association Small Centre Award for National Public Works Week – again.

“A lot of hard work and dedication goes into our National Public Works Week events,” said General Manager of Infrastructure Services Azam Khan. “We want to connect with the public about what Public Works does, and it is always a great opportunity for the community to get involved.”

Typically taking place in the third week of May, National Public Works Week is celebrated across Canada. For Cold Lake, it’s a time of week-long celebration, including events for children, students, adults, and seniors.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our celebration of National Public Works Week,” said Khan. “This year we had a special flag made, and did a flag raising ceremony to kick everything off.”

Besides the flag raising, other events included the Paint a Plow, where students from participating schools painted one of the plow blades that is used in the winter to move snow; colouring contest for grade school students; open house to show the public the inner workings of Public Works; toxic round-up for materials that need to be removed from the home; Fill the Plow Food Drive, and more.

“Our Public Works department works endlessly to make the city operate more smoothly,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “To be acknowledged for their hard work, and the celebrations we put on in May, is well-earned for all the staff.”

The award was announced on Monday, Aug. 28 from the Canadian Public Works Association portion of the Public Works Expo in Orlando, Florida.
