Josh Kutryk, Canadian Astronaut
Joshua Kutryk, who hails from Beauvallon and is now a Canadian astronaut, has an Elk Point connection. When the astronaut was a young boy, he attended Elk Point Elementary. He spent his third grade (1990-91) in Mr. Wruth’s class and played baseball and hockey with the Elk Point clubs during the 18 months he lived in the community. Kutryk’s father, was an RCMP member in town. To learn more about Kutryk, watch the interview hosted by Jena and Husband Chad at Connect@10 with Joshua Kutryk
Trouble with Internet Connectivity?
As the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications) recently declared high-speed internet to be a basic service, the Government of Canada is moving towards ensuring that citizens in rural, remote, and northern parts of the country can be part of the digital economy. Shannon Stubbs, MP for the Lakeland constituency, wants to make sure that residents in her riding have full access. If internet connectivity is an issue in your area, contact Shannon.Stubbs@parl.gc.ca or phone her office in Two Hills at 780 657-7075.
Waiting to Haul Water?
A site has been agreed upon for the new water-fill station in Elk Point, although it’s still a few months from operation. Following land exchanges and rezoning between the town and the ag society, the station will be developed on the north-east corner of Highway 41 and 57th Avenue.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Information on the geographic location of properties in town is now available to real estate offices at any time through the town’s website. The geographic data is also shared with emergency services so locations can be found quickly and accurately.
Walking Trail
The walking trail is becoming an attractive feature in Elk Point, and town council is pleased with the results. The solar powered lights and smooth trails have been in use for some time. Banners erected this spring have weathered powerful storms. Petunia pots overflow with colour and fragrance. Over 40 trees provide shade. Benches and garbage bins are being installed, and the route expansion is continuing along Railway Avenue
Commemorative Bench
Some of the benches along the walking trail have been designated as memorials to loved ones. While you are out walking, watch for the bench donated by Levi & Sabrina Stewart in memory of Kenneth (Kenny) Stewart. If you would like to provide a memorial bench, contact CAO Ken Gwozdz at the town office (780 724-3810).
