St. Paul Mosquito Provincial Baseball Team Opens Play

After the regular season of baseball, another chance to play has popped up for some St. Paul moquito players. The ‘A’ Provincial team features kids from house teams within St. Paul. The team played their first games this past weekend.

St. Paul hosts opening weekend

For the first time in a while, St. Paul hosted mosquito ‘A’ provincial ball. The weekend (July 8-9) featured the first games of the provincial run. Fans in St. Paul were treated to quite a show from the nine and ten year old players. The team won two out of three games over the weekend. Their opponents were teams from Fort McMurray, Beaumont, and Edmonton.

“We’re looking good, and feeling good about things right now. Hopefully we are able to carry that momentum off to Kitscoty on Wednesday.” Coach Reg Mortenson says.

On the road

The mosquito team will head to Kitscoty on Wednesday. They will rest a few days, and then head to Edmonton to face a South-West team, and North-East team. The Edmonton games will be played at Rundle Park. From there all the teams in competition will be grouped based on game results. They will head into the final weekend a couple weeks from now.

Get to know the team

Pitching shuts down good hitting is the old adage. Mortenson has had the kids working on their hitting, but knows that pitching is still his team’s strength.

“At this level where it’s all pitch counts, you’ve got to make sure you’ve got enough pitchers. You can’t just ride two kids.. It’s very important to make sure you’ve got enough kids that can pitch.” Mortenson adds.
