Bear loose in Bonnyville
UPDATE: Bear Shot within Town Limits
This morning at approximately 08:00 am, Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a bear in the area of Hwy 28 near the C2 Centre. A patrol was made and with the assistance of Bonnyville Fire and Fish and Wildlife, the large bear was located up a tree at the intersection of 50th avenue and 44th street. Due to the size of the bear and the proximity to nearby residences the decision was made to destroy the animal and this was carried out by Fish and Wildlife.
No one likes to dispatch an animal, particularly a healthy one but this bear’s proximity to nearby residences and children heading to school made this decision necessary. – S/Sgt. Gandolfi
Roadways near the event were closed temporarily to ensure the safety of the public. Residents are reminded that bears certainly do come into town sites and that garbage and food and the primary reason. Safe garbage handling is essential to keeping bears in the country where they belong.
Background
The Bonnyville RCMP and Fish & Wildlife are currently attempting to capture a bear that is loose in the town. The bear was reported around 7:45 am near the Beau Vista area of the town. Since it has been seen near the ball diamonds and most recently near the Mark’s Work Warehouse strip mall.
The public is asked to stay clear of the area. If you have a bear sighting to report contact the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment.
