FCSS in Co. St Paul & Elk Point.

All across the province, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) offices coordinate activities and events. The general goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles that strengthen the quality of life for individuals and communities.

Janice Fodchuk, director for FCSS in the County of St. Paul & Elk Point, attended the Elk Point town council meeting on April 24 and presented plans for activities as well as information on services provided.

Tax time is not something most people look forward to, but FCSS has made it a little less stressful for over 200 individuals who have been helped with their income tax returns.

If spring ever really arrives, residents of Fort George and Buckingham House seniors’ apartments will enjoy raised gardens in which to plant vegetables or flowers. The gardens have been donated by Urban Systems, “a professional consulting firm committed to supporting vibrant communities,” that has been involved in planning the regional water system.

Fodchuk is excited about a Salad in a Jar project to be initiated in high schools. Students who participate will begin with discussions on healthy eating, then will each be provided with a mason jar, a recipe card,  and a grocery store gift card.  They will purchase groceries to create the salads on the recipe cards, and make the salads in the jars. The project is intended to support students’ efforts to eat healthy foods and to reduce the risk of cancer.

FCSS and the Elk Point recreation department are partnering to offer an “unplugged” evening. Families or individuals can leave their phones and other technology at home and get together to play good old fashioned board and card games. Watch for location and dates.

A Volunteer Alberta grant was approved, and will be used to recognize the largest group of volunteers in the county: those involved with Haying in the 30’s.

Other projects being considered include an infant CPR course in Mallaig and Ashmont, a wilderness course for teenagers, and a community service trip, depending on interest and availability.

Also, the bus trip to Greenland Nurseries scheduled for May 11 is filling fast. Call Terry at (780)724-3800 if you’d like a seat.
