Glendon Sports Standout Headed To Nationals
Strong provincial showing leads to big opportunity
Brooke Skrypichayko has been playing hockey since she was five years old. Now 16, Brooke is seeing years of hard work coming together. Skrypichayko is quite the multi-sport talent, playing 1A Basketball for Glendon. She is also a zone athlete in Badminton.
The National Stage
Brooke had a successful showing with the Frog Lake Midget Girls team at Alberta Native Provincials where she captured a bronze medal. Shortly after, she received a call asking her to be a part of Team Alberta for the National Aboriginal Championship. She will travel down to Cowichan, B.C. on April 28. Team Alberta’s first practice is on April 30.
There will be teams representing every region of Canada. Top talent from B.C. to the Atlantic, and the north will be gathered in Cowichan. The tournament has a male competition as well as the female tournament. The National Aboriginal Championship runs May 1 – May 7. Approximately 450 players, coaches, and team staff will be involved in the week long tournament.
Team Alberta is guaranteed to play four round robin games during the tournament. If they should advance out of the round robin pool, they will play single elimination games for a chance at the championship.
“I am really excited to play at the national level. I did play against these girls in the provincials. I know some names… I’m hoping we put in a good team effort.” Skrypichayko says of the opportunity.
Multi-sport talent
This season Brooke was the captain of St. Paul Xtreme Midget girls hockey team. April 26, she is in Lac La Biche for badminton zones. Basketball is also a big focus for Brooke. In addition to everything else, Skrypichayko is contemplating adding club level track and field to her repertoire.
“Last year she was the 1A rookie of the year in Alberta for basketball.” Sherry McGinnis, Brooke’s mom, adds.
