Dr B Kids Energize the Oilers
Promoting healthy living won a Dr Brosseau class a trip to an Oiler’s game.
The grade 5D class at Ecole Dr. Brosseau School (Dr B) recently energized themselves into Roger’s Place by winning a province-wide competition that promotes healthy lifestyles. The contest required each of the 26 students to be active for 60 minutes a day, explains classroom teacher, Michelle Drapaka.
“Students took pledged and completed 60 minutes of activity each day with classes also participating in three fun challenges along the way,” Mrs. Drapaka explains the kids and the competition found fun ways to stay active. “Classrooms were eligible to win awesome Oilers prizes, including the grand prize, a trip of a lifetime to see the Oilers live in action at Rogers Place.”
“I did notice a change in my students,” Mrs. Drapaka say students were excited about being active, “They were very interested in being active. I think that is why they enjoyed the run for KidSport.”
Throughout the season over 360 classrooms with over 8,900 students from communities all over Northern Alberta participated in the Energize Oil Country program presented by Cenovus and powered by Jumpstart. Mrs. Drapaka says another teacher played an important role in the Energize contest, “[I had] ankle surgery in December and was off work until February 1, 2017; so Julie Norrie ran the program with both English grade 5’s during Health.” Both teachers will be attending the Oiler’s game on April 9th, along with the students.
The competition ran from January 9th to March 20th, with a lot of fun along the way, says Drapaka, Some of the cool things that the kids participated in were: Skiing at Kinooso January 13 and March 1, a Lacrosse workshop at the school and students had made a pledge to increase activity around home and on the weekends.” The kids also participated in the Curtis Hargrove 24 Hour Run for KidSport Bonnyville.
The activities were tracked using a Journal that each student was given at the start. All classes signed a poster of Cam Talbot (who is the Ambassador for this program) and pledged to be active.
