What’s the most recent news out of Elk Point Council Chambers?

  • The immediate excitement is the upcoming Midget D hockey provincial championships from March 23-26. Expect restaurants and motels to be busy, and parking around the arena and schools to be at a premium.
  • Congratulations to Jordan Cousins, who has been officially recognized by the town as the new Fire Chief. Congratulations also to Rob Duffy, who has received designation as Fire Investigator Group B Level 1.
  • Councillors are taking advantage of the province of Alberta’s program to upgrade for energy efficiency. All Alberta residents can register to have LED lightbulbs,high-efficiency shower heads, faucet aerators, advanced power bars and smart thermostats installed to replace less efficient ones. Check the Alberta Government website for more information.
  • Municipal elections will be held in October. Anyone interested in the roles and responsibilities of a councillor can check the Municipal Affairs website. For more personal information, Elk Point’s CAO, Ken Gwozdz, will respond to any questions, and provide a tour of small town politics. Contact him at the town office – 780 724 3810.
  • The transfer station is now open to the public on Thursdays, as well as on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The station, located south of town across from the golf course entrance, accepts recyclable paper, cardboard, and plastic. It also has designated areas for batteries, paint, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, compost, and wood. Items that are not recyclable can be placed in the landfill area.
