Walk A Mile In Her Shoes A Huge Success

Local men bring awareness to domestic violence in red high heels

The Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre (DMSCC) will be hosted their first event in Bonnyville, on February 26th, with ‘Walk A Mile in Her Shoes’. The awareness campaign is an International men’s march to show solidarity against domestic violence. 20 brave men donned red high heels and strutted their stuff at the Pontiac’s game at the Centennial Centre Sunday afternoon.

This is the first time the international men’s walk against gender violence has been held in the area. Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre’s Bonnyville office brought the event here to raise awareness and some funds for their programs. “63 files have been opened in the Bonnyville office since it opened in March of 2016,” stated Serena Parsons, Resource Development Officer for DMSCC.

Some of the walkers included David Beele from the FCSS office, Mayor Gene Sobolewski, as well as firefighters, peace officers, Protection for the Unprotected Society, and members of the local media. Even the players of the Pontiacs got in on the cause, lacing up their skates with bright red laces.

The event raised approximately $4,000.00 for the Bonnyville Community Support Program, the joint outreach program between Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre and Bonnyville and District FCSS.
