Ice Celebrate Season & Player Accomplishments at Awards Banquet
Witney & Hamilton named Co-MVPs
The Cold Lake Ice celebrated a successful regular season and the players that made it possible with their awards banquet on Sunday evening. Head Coach of the Jr B Ice, says it’s important to recognize the hard work the players have put in this year. The coach explains it can be a hard task when choosing which players deserve awards, because hockey is a team effort.
“There’s lots of guys winning these awards. It’s a team game, if you want to win the league or provincials,” that’s why they give the tough decisions to the coach, “you have to pick the guys that excel and stand out from the rest of the crew. We talk as a coaching staff, and with a few other people, (fans) that watch our games on a regular basis and we go from there.”
The team decided to go with co-MVPs (Most Valuable Players) this season, coach says both players awarded really shined this season. “Those two were work horses all year. They’re leaders on and off the ice. Every shift they did their job and went full throttle. Offensive catalysts for our team and lead us.”
The sharing the honours of MVP for the 2016-17 season were captain Curtis Witney and assistant captain Jason Hamilton. Both players say it was an honour to be named along side each other. “Wits is one of my best friends,” proclaims Jason Hamilton with a smile, “to share it with him, it’s definitely an honour and I couldn’t ask for a better award.”
Curtis Witney echoed his teammate, as he also celebrated his final year in junior B hockey, “it’s pretty cool I can end it like this. I’m definitely gonna miss playing here.”

- Top Defenceman – Brae Howatt
- Graduating players – Brown, Whitney and Zarowny
After finishing fifth in the Northeast Alberta Jr B Hockey League, the Ice head into the post season on Wednesday evening as they take on Killiam in round one of the playoffs. The best of seven series will take the Ice on the road for games 1 & 2, before returning home to Imperial Oil Place this Saturday for game 3 of the series.
